So… what is the difference between Counselling, Coaching and Psychotherapy?
Counselling focuses on a clients difficult emotions, adverse experiences and painful memories related to the past with the aim of finding “resolutions.” A counsellor’s role is to guide a client to self inquiry and assist them to gain self-awareness of their thought processes, values and beliefs. A trained counsellor will do this using non-judgement, empathy and listening skills. Depression, anxiety, stress, relationship and self-esteem issues are some of the issues addressed in counselling. The counselling process relies on a range of different therapeutic methods and psycho-education to benefit the clients’ moods, behaviours and decision making. The outcome from counselling is always to “feel better” through healing, releasing blocks and finding solutions to life problems.
Psychotherapy works at a deeper and more analytic level to uncover the patterns and conditioned beliefs of a client that has impacted their situation. The history, upbringing and life experiences of a client are investigated with the objective of developing insight into the aspects of one’s personality. The aim of psychotherapy is to restructure the self and heal the damage of adverse life effects. The goal is to psychologically prepare the client for more satisfying life situations, relationships and improved interactions.
Coaching is an effective means of problem solving and strategising for goal obtainment and the pursuit of life-long dreams. Where counselling works on finding “resolutions,” coaching works on achieving “results.” A coach’s role is to assist in implementing action steps, navigating road blocks and guiding a client to effective decision making. The role of a coach is to motivate, inspire action and teach both discipline and leadership skills. A coach will mentor a client to develop self-knowledge, confidence, creativity and high personal standards necessary for achieving peak performance and the success they desire. As coaching is an unregulated industry it is beneficial to seek coaching with someone trained in counselling and psychotherapy to ensure a higher level of skill and training. By choosing a coach with therapeutic training one is more capable of clearing subconscious blocks that can fast track ones road to success.
I Use All Three
Using the complimentary modalities of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching allows me to work with you at a deeper level and create powerful shifts. These shifts in perception work by allowing you to become your authentic self, master your emotions and function from your highest ability.
Adverse life experiences have the potential to make us doubt ourselves at a subconscious level, no matter how small. Trauma, anxiety and depression can be incredibly debilitating. Likewise the prospect of having a “successful” life (in other words doing what it is your REALLY want to do and having what you desire) can be confronting, overwhelming and seem unachievable.
However, the human species is wired to be resilient and achieve incredible things. All of us need help with our emotions, problem-solving and decision making at many times throughout our lives to get us to where we want to be. I use all all three modalities coaching, counselling and psychotherapy to help you get there.
